The Grand Sud shopping center, opened in Lattes in 1983, is located at the heart of the EcoCité Route de la Mer, an ambitious urban renewal project over 2,500 hectares to the west of Montpellier and among the 13 national EcoCité projects selected in 2009. The EcoCité Route de la Mer focuses on the transformation and renewal of commercial and housing spaces situated in a fragile natural environment, close to the coast and highly prone to flooding. The redevelopment and extension project for the Grand Sud shopping center and the creation of a mixed district incorporates the EcoCité requirements in terms of innovation, particularly regarding water management, biodiversity, transportation organization, the evolution of consumption patterns, the establishment of sustainable governance, and an open and intelligent management of urban services, etc. The EcoCité relies on major infrastructures (high-speed rail line, TGV station, double A9 motorway) and aims to organize Montpellier’s north‑south axis towards the sea, with an implementation target by 2030. Supported by the construction of the 4th metropolitan tramway line, the release of land for natural spaces and the creation of new mixed-use banks, the Grand Sud project is one of the major stages of this innovative urban project, with the integration of a built frontage along the tramway line incorporating a true mix of functions where the shopping center is transformed into an urban district combining services and office activities and a leisure center, hotel, student housing, senior residences, serviced residences, co‑working spaces, etc.
